Surgical Dermatology Q & A

Beaird Dermatology, SC

What is surgical dermatology?

Surgical dermatology involves treating your skin issues — whether cosmetic or medical — while using the least invasive option possible. Dr. Beaird and her team perform many surgical treatments in the office while you’re awake.

Some types of surgical dermatology treatment include:

  • Mole, cyst, and wart removal
  • Acne scar surgery
  • Laser scar revision
  • Keloid treatment
  • Body contouring
  • Varicose vein treatments
  • Antiaging treatments

With advancements in dermatology, the team at  Beaird Dermatology often use modern laser systems to correct many types of skin issues. This minimizes healing time and scarring.

How does a doctor perform Mohs surgery?

Mohs surgery — named after the dermatologist who invented it — is a highly effective, gold-standard treatment for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Because of his extensive Mohs surgery training, Dr. Gabriel Martinez-Diaz performs all Mohs surgeries at Beaird Dermatology, so you can be confident you’re in expert hands.

During your procedure, Dr. Martinez-Diaz removes any cancerous cells as well as a small surrounding layer of skin. He then evaluates your tissue under a microscope while you wait and ensures that no cancer cells remain.

If he does find additional abnormal cells, he removes another layer of tissue from the same spot. While you do lose some skin tissue, as a Mohs surgery specialist, Dr. Martinez-Diaz spares as much healthy tissue as possible. You’re left with minimal scarring and a quick healing period.

Is dermatologic surgery painful?

It’s normal to have some discomfort during dermatologic surgeries, but it’s unlikely that your procedure will leave you in severe pain. Before getting started, your practitioner numbs your skin thoroughly.

Patients usually complain that the initial stinging of the numbing injection is the worst part of their entire office visit. Once it kicks in though, you shouldn’t feel any pain, although you could feel an awkward scraping sensation. If you’re in discomfort during your skin surgery, let your dermatologist know. They have topical numbing solutions available and can often inject more numbing solution directly to your treatment area.
