There are different kinds of acne that we can put into two categories: Inflammatory and Non-Inflammatory Acne. Inflammatory are the inflamed, deep pimples, pustules, and cysts. These types of acne can cause scarring and pain. Non-Inflammatory is considered comedonal acne – AKA - whiteheads and blackheads.
We have some tips to help avoid your teen from scarring and further irritating their acne:
Tip #1: Try to avoid picking at the acne, this can lead to scarring and unwanted pigmentation.
Tip #2: It is important to shower right after exercise or practice to remove the built-up bacteria that can clog pores.
Tip #3: Avoid over exfoliating the skin, this can damage the most outer layer of skin leaving it exposed, irritated and prone to more breakouts.
Tip #4: Protect your skin from the sun, blue light, and pollution! SPF 30+ everyday to defend against harmful UV rays.
When is it time to see a dermatologist? We recommend starting your teen out by washing their face twice a day with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser. After this, they can apply a topical acne treatment whether that is over the counter, or something prescribed by a dermatologist. Then finishing up with a gentle moisturizer and applying sunscreen on top! When this simple regimen is not improving or keeping their acne stable, it may be time to get professional help. We have numerous treatment options available to help them feel comfortable in their skin!
